- Class III - dam failure has a low probability for causing loss of life and minimal economic loss.
- NRCS dam classification levels
- High Hazard – dam failure may cause loss of life and serious damage to homes, industrial or commercial buildings, important public utilities, main highways or railroads.
- Significant Hazard – dam failure may cause significant damage to isolated homes, main highways or minor railroads, or cause interruption of use or service of relatively important public utilities.
- Low Hazard – dam failure may cause damage to farm buildings, agricultural land, or township and county roads.

- Shoal Creek Structure #4 was constructed as a High Hazard dam. The watershed plan is determining the current hazard classification (using State of Illinois and NRCS classification levels) for the dam and what is needed for this dam to meet NRCS and State of Illinois dam safety criteria.
